GlobalSign becomes First Certificate Authority to Issue EV SSL Server Certificates to Korea

Tokyo – July 24, 2008 – GMO Hosting & Security consolidated subsidiary and digital authentication service provider, GlobalSign has issued the EV SSL Guidelines V1.1 compliant EV SSL server certificate to Korean company, Renault Samsung Motors. This marks the first EV SSL Guidelines V1.1 compliant certificate to be issued by a certificate authority to a Korean company. The certificate issue was made possible by e-motion corp. exclusive distributor of the GlobalSign brand in Korea.

EV Guidelines V1.1
EV SSL server certificates are issued in accordance with EV SSL Guidelines to ensure a thorough vetting process. The guidelines were established by CA/Browser Forum, a voluntary organization made up of the worldfs leading certificate authorities and vendors of Internet browser software.
Under the prior EV SSL Guidelines (V1.0), with the exception of Japan where local regulations were already in place, when verifying non-Latin alphabet company names, certificates could not effectively be issued if the name was in a two-byte language*.
The EV SSL Guidelines have now been updated (EV SSL Guidelines V1.1) to include Foreign Organization Name Guidelines for the verification of company names that use two byte languages. GlobalSign has taken the lead under the new guidelines as the first to issue EV SSL server certificates in the Korean market.
*One byte languages are languages in which one byte of data represents one character (letter of the alphabet). English and French are examples of one byte languages. When two bytes of data are required to display one character, the language is a two byte language. Japanese and Korean are examples of two byte languages.

SSL Server Certificates in the Korean Market and the e-motion Partnership
Growth of the Korean SSL server certificate market has been extremely high over the past year.*1 This is largely a result of the Korean Ministry of Information and Communication requirement that as of March 2007 all websites that handle personal details or authentication information must have in place secure communications functions.*2
In light of this trend, GlobalSign identified Korea as a significant growth market and signed a contract with major Korean distributor, e-motion making the company exclusive seller of the GlobalSign brand in Korea. The partnership has brought GlobalSign brand digital certificate services to the Korean market.
